The band's name is apparently a take-off on David Bowie's first band, although the sound is entirely different. Although the music on Get A Load Of... is certainly nasty and has a good snarl to it, the band has the good sense to play at a tempo that is appropriate for their music. We've said it before and we'll say it again, speed is cool...but it is power, first and foremost, that really matters in playing loud rock music. The Cavemanish Boys set a mood with their tunes. The rhythms are pure dynamite, the guitars nice and meaty, and the vocals filled to the brim with attitude. The overall sound is sixties in nature, but revved up and powerful enough to really get your panties all pumped up. The file also includes 2 tracks from their 1st ever demo tape (train of pain & race to hell ) plus another one from that demo played live that night ( the lonesome train by J. Burnette). As the Pacific Northwest entry in garage-rock's second coming, Portland, Oregon's Miracle Workers looked no further than their own backyard for initial inspiration. Rather than the more psychedelic meanderings of their peers, the original five-piece lineup stomped and snarled through layers of fuzz much like local deities the Sonics and the Wailers. Both of the Miracle Workers' early EPs boast a heartening percentage of originals — not a majority, mind you, but they were playing to an audience that considered the use of strings manufactured after '66 heretical — that easily outstrip the group's covers in both songwriting and energy. Tracks from each (as well as a slew of previously unreleased treasures) are collected on Moxie's Revenge.

Even though their output isn't quite as consistently amazing as I'd like, at their peak (spread over two albums over a decade apart) The Feelies were one of the greatest bands you never heard. Even though the credit nowadays seems to go entirely to bands like R.E.M., Hüsker Dü and - perhaps - The Replacements, there were several bands on that second tier that also made their mark on the evolution of underground American rock in the 80's and beyond. Greg Sage and The Wipers paved the way for a more abrasive punk/rock-fusion that replaced a creed of destruction with worshipping at the altar of the guitar, the feedback-drenched work-outs of The Dream Syndicate reminded people of the importance of The Velvet Underground while the band also helped creating alt country on later efforts, but perhaps most influential were The Feelies, whose image (and this album cover?) predated Weezer and whose music, in one way or another, shaped almost a whole generation of bands. Their ultra-thin jangle-sound - a more playful, caffeine-tight version of Television's noir epics - definitely was an influence on R.E.M. (Peter Buck would produce the band's second effort), The dB's and many of the folk-rock bands copping ideas from The Byrds, The Velvet Underground and their offspring. Their nerdiness combined that of The Modern Lovers with Devo's (and was taken to another level by The Violent Femmes), while their knack for nervous, jittery sounds and rhythms sometimes recalled Wire, The Talking Heads and the more straightforward Krautrock albums (on this album at least).
