The Athens Underground 1964-1983

On June 29, CAMP presents the opening of the first part of the major exhibition, “Underground in Athens -part one1964-1983. The goal here is to present the full scale of an important social event in Athens, during the 60s, 70s and early 80s. From the proto-beatnick tendencies of Pali magazine up to Punk nihilism and the gradual radicalization and call to violence, two decades later. from the countless publications of the 70s and 80s that circulated around Exarheia square to psychedelic and underground tendencies found among mainstream (or not so mainstream) art galleries at the time. From hallucinatory and transgressive film experiments to interchanges between music and the visual arts. This exhibition is going to present the overall social, cultural and political climate of that era -shockingly similar to ours. For that purpose historical overview is being expanded by a dialogue with a new art scene which, in many ways, can be interpreted as a “new underground”.
The second part of the exhibition titled “Underground in Athens -part two 1984-2012 explores artistic cases from these equally turbulent years. During the 3-month duration of this 2-part exhibition a series of parallel events such as talk shows, discussions, projections and music concerts will take place at the CAMP. A major edition will be published at the occasion of the exhibition and be presented at both the opening and a separate event.

Several hangovers, heartaches, empty bottles and cigarettes later, the Rags went in the studio in September and recorded their own blend of garage/punk Rn'R, the 5-track "Drunken Angel EP".

Dimentia 13 - S/T ( Midnight 1985 )

Neo-Psychedelic Classic from the "mysterious" Dementia 13 in 1985!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are excerpts from main feature article in Freakbeat #6 by Richard Allen.
Way back in the incense-fogged, swirling yesterdays of 1985 Dimentia 13 unveiled their first album, which was released on the ever alternative Midnight records label of New York, USA. The music, a fusion of Garage, Acid Rock and lonesome acoustic folk (with a touch of the psychotically surreal), appealed to lysergic fans all and sundry. Dimentia 13's debut record still sounds as fresh today as the day it was born . . . [and has] found its day-glo niche in the halls of psychedelia. However the identity of the band remained a complete mystery, the only clue being the name of the producer, Brad Warner and the engineer Scot Goodman. Midnight were certainly not giving the game away and in 1987, two years later, a second LP appeared in an amazing mirror sleeve.

Blue Orchids - The Greatsest Hit (Money Mountain) ( Rough Trade 1982 )

Post-Punk psychedelic pop classic from Manchester in 1982
----------------------------------------------------------

his Manchester quartet, which included two early members of the Fall — guitarist/singer Martin Bramah and keyboardist Una Baines — used organ as its main instrument, but at times on The Greatest Hit it sounds as if Baines is playing a different song from the rest of the band. There are many overlapping layers in the deceptively simple sound; the long organ washes are interrupted by guitars lurching to the fore. Bass and drums keep the steady beat, but the others don't necessarily fall in line behind them. Vocals are half-sung, half-spoken and full of poetic pretense, but it's the mesmerizing music that captures the listener in bright swirling folds. While The Greatest Hit can be simply tagged as neo-psychedelia, that doesn't cover the full scope of this fascinating band's music.

Pere Ubu - Dub Housing ( Chrysalis 1979 )

Second LP by Pere Ubu in 1979...!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The spectacular Dub Housing accentuates the more amorphous qualities of the band's sound, drawing heavily on synthesizer player Allen Ravenstine's utterly original soundscaping ability. Songs like "Codex," "Caligari's Mirror" and the ominous title track conjure up images straight out of art-house psychological horror films like Carnival of Souls. Simply one of the most important post-punk recordings
