v.a BLOW UP Presents: Exclusive Blend Vol. 1 ( Blow Up 1996 )

A groundbreaking compilation -- and one of the first sets to ever explore the rare treasure trove of grooves from the sound library scene! This one's filled with 16 sparkling grooves from the vaults of the KPM record library -- a rare source for radio and TV production tunes that's been mined by other folks over the years, but not so classically as the folks at Blow Up! The set's got some monster funky grooves from the gods of the Brit Easy scene -- Alan Hawkshaw, Johnny Pearson, Alan Parker, Ray Cameron, Keith Mansfield, and others -- and titles include "Move Move Move", "Snowman's Stomp", "Rocky Mountain Runabout", "Take To The Sky", "Come Here Calcutta", "Powerhouse Pop", "The Zodiac", and "French Kick". Very nice -- and with plenty of Hammond, horns, and cool guitars!

Pussy Garole - Pussy Gold 5000 e.p ( Buy Our 1987 )

Deconstructionist trash-rock act Pussy Galore is noteworthy if for no other reason than the bands that it would eventually spawn--Boss Hog, Free Kitten, the Royal Trux, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, among others. Formed by the latter act's titular corpse-of-Elvis frontman in the early 1980s, Pussy Galore were about as offensive, aggressive, and inaccessible as a band that professed a love of the Rolling Stones could get. Nonetheless, Spencer and company's clanging no-fi sound and its slaying of one rock-&-roll sacred cow after another represented a fearless interpretation of punk, one that influenced many a band to follow in its twisted wake. In September '86, Pussy Galore recorded tracks for "Pussy Gold 5000", In January '87, "Pussy Gold 5000" was released, the single pressing of 3,000 sold out in one month.
Arguably one of the most inept bands of all times, Pussy Galore played blaspheme, obscene, irriverent, barbaric and often out-of-tune punk-blues. The hoarse and demented vocals of John Spencer, the ridicule guitar strumming of Julia Cafritz and Neil Hagerty framed the sub-amateurish sound of the EP Groovy Hate Fuck (1986). They moved to New York, where they added ex-Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert and keyboardist Cristina Martinez, and they tripled the absurdity of their garage-sound. Thus, their first full-length, Right Now (1987), sounded like Captain Beefheart meeting the Cramps and Einsturzende Neubauten in a studio with defective microphones. Spencer disassembled and "de-sematicized" rock'n'roll and then built a new syntax based on the genre's illicit sounds, i.e. on its most subversive codes. And carried out this semiotic operation while posing as a satanic pervert. Dial M For Motherfucker (1989) was even more meaningless and pointless, but that was precisely the point. Pussy Galore begot an impressive cast of alternative groups: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Royal Trux, Bewitched, Boss Hog, etc. Never was an irrelevant entity made so relevant by its irrelevance.

The Fleshtones - Roman Gods ( I.R.S 1982 )

"Roman Gods" (IRS 1981) is another spectacular example in this style: derivative but irresistible, passionate and involving. "Right" (an unstoppable garage-rocker) and "Roman Gods" (an almost epic instrumental) are obvious references to the music of the 60’s. This tribute reaches its zenith with "Let's See the Sun," a memorable reinvention of surf music. Many other tracks sound like eccentric mutations/variations on those same premises from the rockabilly march of "World has Changed" to the Animals-esque hymn "I've Gotta Change My Life." The epic aura and tribal hints of "Shadow Line" that recall the Talking Heads' neurotic rhythms and the silly soul march of "Stop Fooling Around" (so reminiscent of Paul Revere) contribute to make this album one of the masterpieces of the decade, one of those records that managed to renew once more the recurring white re-interpretation of black music - i.e., the real essence of rock and roll. Peter Zaremba, by selectively recovering and dismissing elements of that early sound, found his own original and powerful songwriting style - which can be called rock'n'roll revival only on a superficial level."

The Brood - In Spite Of It All ( Skyclad 1988 )

''The Brood is an all-woman group, but this fact alone does not make them remarkable or notable. The fiery, inspirational 60's punk garage music they create is what sets them apart. Unlike other girl groups which sought to cash in on the novelty of their gender, the Brood is a world-class garage group first, and talanted female musicians second. Each discs contain a consistent rough edge, with guts and fuzz galore - and all of their output is highly recommended. They are the definition of pure teen garage-mania.''
