Originally released as a bootleg album in 1990 by A Father Yod Production records, featuring just seven tracks and wrongly subtitled "Rehearsals in Rugby - January 1986." it became a prime collectors item and was subsequently given a second unofficial release in 1994 on Bomp Records. The tracks which make up "Taking Drugs" were originally recorded as demos in Northampton and later, both Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce would profess these versions to be superior to those which eventually made it onto the albums "Sound Of Confusion" and "The Perfect Prescription".
It remains hard to this day to argue with that fact as there is a sense of urgency and freshness about these sessions that never quite came to the fore in the album versions. Despite being recorded at a time when the internal wranglings and mistrusts which would eventually destroy the band where yet to become evident, there is still an amazing sense of bleakness and nihilistic outpourings on "Taking Drugs" which gives an unerring sense of the finite, the desolate and the life ravaging problems that were to encompass them in years to come and, as an album, it is all the stronger for that outlook.
This versiuon on Space age includes a previously unreleased version of "Transparent Radiation", recorded during the same sessions.
Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To" remains to this day a phenomenal insight into the minds of one of the UK's most important bands of the era
